Walk (63) Roques de Garcia Circular (National Park)
Readily accessible in less than an hour from the southern resorts, this is a classic short walk in the Teide National Park. It encircles the world-renown and iconic Roques de Garcia on a route that gives ample opportunity to take in their rugged grandeur from different angles and to marvel at the wider landscape …

Around and About the Roques de Garcia
We headed up to the relative cool of the national park today again as the unseasonal calima, and the cloying heat it brings with it, continues. Unusually, we met lots of walkers. Perhaps everyone had the same idea as us …

Walk (62) Guia de Isora-Casa Ramallo-El Jaral Circular (Guia de Isora)
This fairly strenuous walk is described as moderate to hard mainly because of the tricky and demanding section crossing Barranco Ramallo on a narrow and sometimes precipitous path (see fuller walk description). Otherwise, it’s a fine walk on old paths, with great open views. El Jaral and Guia de Isora are both attractive and interesting places …

Wow Spectacular Masca Ridge!
We walked along the Masca ridge yesterday. Watching the traffic wind its way along the narrow, twisty mountain road to the tiny village of Masca and beyond was fascinating. (Not quite the F-word frequently used by J as we drove back on it ourselves …!  )

Echoes of Scotland …!
Walking in the north today we had ferns, heather, mountains, 16C temperatures, cloud and light drizzle which quickly became rain. Much like walking back home in Scotland, actually …

Out of Zone …
We just had a lazy stroll in the woods today, out of our walks website zone in the verdant “North”. San Jose de Los Llanos is less than 20 miles away by car from today’s hazy sunshine in Playa de San Juan, but the temperature was 12 degrees lower at 16°C, with persistent drizzle. Fair enough, as we ended up being not far off the height of Cairn Gorm …

Today’s Hike to El Jaral
That was a tough one today. Guia de Isora – El Jaral circular. Some very rough paths, hard climbs and even a wee bit of rock scrambling. There’s an easier route J tells me … now …

The Barranco Ramallo Test!
Some more pics from Alison’s iPad showing snippets of our progress from Guia de Isora to El Jaral and back again, involving just under 9 km

in distance and almost 600 m overall ascent, taking in all the ups and downs. On the tricky section, negotiating Barranco Ramallo, the iPad was firmly stashed away in the rucksack …!

Walk (61) El Retamar-Santiago Del Teide Circular (Santiago del Teide)
On paper this looks an unremarkable walk, but the short and undemanding route provides lots of marvellous scenic opportunities, including an optional diversion to check out the Fuente de Chasonguayo, an ancient source of water high on the hillside above the town of Santiago del Teide, where there are tremendous views towards El Teide …

Every Cloud …
Some more from Santiago del Teide. At 900 metres up, the weather and temperature can change quickly here, and it often does. Sun or cloud, it’s still beautiful …

Fuente de Chasonguayo

Yesterday, our walk from El Retamar led us through the main street in Santiago del Teide where we took the opportunity to check out the Fuente de Chasonguayo, an ancient source of water high on the hillside above the town. In recent times the place has taken on a religious character, with large white crosses on the path and a representation of the “Virgen de Lourdes” installed in the little grotto. It was certainly worth the 800 m diversion from our route, and 85 m climb, for some very special views …

Walk (60) Parador-Sanatorio Return (National Park)
The start point at the Parador in the Teide National Park is less than an hour’s drive from the southern resorts in Tenerife. The walk provides a gentle introduction to walking in this unique landscape, surrounded by high volcanic peaks, with successions of bold and fascinating rock formations close to the track showcasing a dizzying array of metallic colours and eroded shapes. The turning point of the walk is an intriguing collection of buildings called El Sanatoria, at a mid-point in the volcanic plain between Teide and Montaña Guajara, intended as a location to treat patients with lung problems, but never operational …

A Cool Place …

Missing Hurricane Ophelia …
Courtesy of the spin-off from hurricane Ophelia, it was unusually cloudy in the National Park today. With a good breeze and temperatures at around 15C, my fleece saw its first outing of the year. Albeit briefly …

El Sanatorio
The turning point on our walk in the National Park today was this little collection of buildings. Many years ago they were intended to be a sanatorium for patients with lung problems, but apparently the intended facility never opened. Here’s one take on the story if you are interested …

Walk (59) Las Vegas-Pino del Haba-El Seco (Granadilla)
The Las Vegas area, near Granadilla, is great for walking – amongst rural terraces, open pine forest and rugged barrancos. The routes are also well served with walks signposts and information boards. We have another 4 walks “on our books” to do in this area, so watch this space …

Betting on Las Vegas …
Almost to the day, it’s been 7 months since we last walked from Las Vegas, Granadilla. Last time was a glorious day without a cloud in the sky, and today was the same, with stunning views at every turn along the track. Also, the charming and friendly ambience of the La Tasquita de Las Vegas makes it the perfect place to rest up with a cool beer afterwards! We have another 3 walks “on our books” to do in this area so I don’t think we’ll make the mistake again of leaving it another 7 months before our return …!

A Cool Walk
Unfortunately the cloud descended on our walk today from Tijoco Alto to the isolated and abandoned farm-house of Icerse. At around 1,300 metres (4,265 feet), the temperature was 16°C, 12 degrees lower than back at the seaside in sunny Playa San Juan. A very enjoyable hike all the same …!

Walk (57) Chio-Chiguergue Circular (Guia de Isora)
The first part of this walk descends from Chio to the old Camino Real to Guia de Isora where there are very good views of the west coast of the island. A steep ascent then takes you up to the charming little church at Chiguergue after which we join the route of the old camino from Chirche, descending through vineyards to the fine church and plaza in Chio …

Walk (56) La Quinta-Aponte-Aserradero Circular (Adeje)
This pleasurable walk from La Quinta, near Taucho, to the abandoned finca of Aponte at 1,200 metres high, passes many rural plots and vineyards, with great views forward up to the mountains, and back to the SW coast of Tenerife. From there, the walk heads towards the forest, with a delightful return to La Quinta amongst open pines from the abandoned logging/farm-house of Aserradero …

Walking a circular route above Taucho and La Quinta at the weekend, the hills and countryside of this beautiful Adeje municipality may seem a world away from its coastal holiday resorts. In terms of distance, though, only a few kilometres …

From Glen to Glen …
We had a great walk yesterday above La Quinta and Taucho in the Adeje area. As the cloud descended, later in the walk, we could almost have been tramping through some of the Scottish glens we know and love … apart from the cacti, irrigation channels and evidence of forest fires, of course …
