Dodging Unfamiliar Wet Stuff!
It’s hard to believe from these photos that we were dodging passing rain showers on our walk down the old Camino Real from Tamaimo to Puerto Santiago on Tuesday …

4 Seasons …!
For some, it was sunbathing between showers here on the coast today while, up high, El Teide got it’s first proper covering of snow this winter. “From mountain to sea” takes on a whole new meaning here …

Walk (82) El Rio-Presa del Rio Circular (Arico)
Surrounded by the honey-coloured stone terraces of the Arico area, the wide-open countryside and mountain views are breathtaking – especially at the wonderfully scenic and rugged Barranco del Rio …

Big Sky Views to Take Your Breath Away …!
We were back amongst the distinctive, honey-coloured stone of Arico and Granadilla de Abona yesterday. The walk was tough at times – specially around the steep Barranco del Rio – but the “take your breath away” views made up for that …

Damn Fine Dam …
The focal point of yesterday’s walk from El Rio was the “Presa del Rio”, an unfinished and abandoned dam in the rugged Barranco del Rio, between Granadilla and Arico. We found the approach to the dam from the east side was a little tricky and precipitous in places but, no doubt, the rock climbers we encountered clinging to the nearby cliffs wouldn’t have blinked an eye …

Walk (81) Chio-Arguayo Circular (Guia de Isora/Santiago del Teide)
Heading uphill out of Chio into the pine-scented open forest, this very scenic route takes an old camino that used to be the main link between the town and Arguayo. There are great views to the west, and El Teide and Pico Viejo also put in an appearance along the way …

Walk (80) La Quinta-Fonte de Aponte Circular (Adeje)
This is an energetic hike, climbing up through pine forest to the abandoned water source at Fuente de Aponte in a delightful wooded barranco. The descent, through open countryside, provides the opportunity for great views in all directions …

Reaching 80 Internet-published walks has been a little bit of a milestone for us. Our inspiration has been the respected “Rother Walking Guide – Tenerife” which contains 80 walks. We don’t compare our modest collection of short walks in “El Sur” to the many “big-ticket” routes in the Rother guide, taking in as it does the classic hikes in the National Park, Anaga and Teno mountain ranges, but still, it’s nice to reach a target we set ourselves …! Many more walks to come, though, 100 being the next milestone …!    www.walktenerifesur.eu

Echoes from Afar …!
It was chilly and damp above Taucho and La Quinta yesterday. Not the Tenerife most people will know. Not our favourite walking conditions either but it’s always good to be reminded of how it can sometimes be at home..!!!

New Life …
Like everywhere we walk in the south, Adeje is so much drier still than this time last year. There are always signs of new life if you look closely enough, though …

Dried Flowers …!
The impact of the continuing drought in the southern area of Tenerife was very evident on our walk yesterday near La Quinta, Adeje. The first photo showing very little new green growth or colour is from yesterday, the others are from just over a year ago in the same area when we were delighted to find wild flowers growing in abundance all along the route …

Walk (78) Montaña Samara-Cuevas Negras Circular (National Park)
This is a great half-day walk offering an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with one of Tenerife’s most exciting volcanic landscapes. There are tremendous views of Mount Teide and, much closer, the towering mass of Pico Viejo. There are also stunning views of the southern edge of the Teno mountains and the islands of La Gomera and La Palma. At the mid-point in the walk you can explore the fascinating area known as “Las Cuevas Negras” …

The Old Peak …
We escaped yesterday’s overcast weather by heading up above the clouds to the National Park. Our walk in search of the Cuevas Negras, amongst the lava fields and pine trees, had particularly good views of Pico Viejo (The Old Peak). Funnily enough, it’s actually a younger volcano than its close neighbour, Pico Teide …

Walk (78) La Jaca-La Listada-Abades Return (Arico)
This strenuous walk from La Jaca on the south-east coast is mostly on very rough terrain. It’s a bracing and vigorous hike with wide open coastal views and a faraway mountain backdrop. The highlight of the walk is the stony beach, captivating bay and rugged cliffs at the Ensenada (Cove) de Abades …

A Hard Rock Hike …
The weather was unusually unpredictable on our side of the island yesterday so we headed for the east coast to walk. It was a long one – and the rough and rocky terrain made it a bit of a grind at times – but a cerveza-stop at Abades helped to recharge the batteries …

Walk (77) Valle de Arriba-Los Partidos Circular (Santiago del Teide)
This is a very pleasant and relatively undemanding walk, initially climbing steadily out of the tiny hamlet of Valle de Arriba on a very old path once used by the farmers of San Jose de los Llanos to access water. Later in the walk, at the charming Casa Rural – Caserio de los Partidos, there is a huge threshing circle, and the opportunity for some splendid views of Teide …

Walk (76) Chiguergue-Camino Los Picachos-Chirche Circular (Guia de Isora)
This is a fine walk that starts with a tough climb out of Chiguergue, and the unrelenting ascent continues for some time on the aptly named Camino los Picachos (Peaks) through open pine forest. The walk provides a great entrance from above to the pretty village of Chirche. There are many opportunities for good views, including of La Gomera and La Palma on a clear day …

Crossing the Borderline …
Partly in the north and partly in the south, yesterday’s route didn’t strictly fit our “Tenerife Sur under 10k” criteria, so we’d no plans to write it up. It was so beautiful, we changed our minds …

Walking in Tenerife Sur – Feature Photos from 2017
When we publish information about our walks in the southern area of Tenerife we always choose one “feature” photo to represent the walk. They show a side of “El Sur” in Tenerife that is very accessible from the holiday resorts, but is not always well known or appreciated for its beauty and character. We’ve had tremendous fun doing these walks over the last 12 months or so, and we hope you enjoy looking at these images … http://bit.ly/2CqUWQz Happy New Year | Feliz Año Nuevo   www.walktenerifesur.eu
